Our 5-week second school placements are a key part of Teach West London's Initial Teacher (ITT) Programme and offer our trainees a wealth of learning experiences, challenges and successes in a new school environment at the start of Spring Term.

One of the most significant areas of growth among Trainees was confidence in classroom management and lesson delivery. Many noted that the experience honed their ability to engage students, manage behaviour effectively and tailor lessons to diverse learning needs. Trainee Clare shared, "I wasn’t sure how I’d manage with Year 5, but I proved to myself that I could do it. The experience has helped me grow in confidence, refine my teaching skills and build strong relationships with both staff and children."

A key highlight for many trainees was the ability to build relationships with students and staff. Trainee Tammy reflected, "Walking into an unknown environment and being able to form relationships with staff, pupils, and parents was a major success." Another trainee (Emma) chimed, "Building relationships and expectations with new children in a short space of time was a highlight of my placement."

Each placement provided unique insights into how schools are managed and organised. From curriculum implementation to staff collaboration, trainees gained a broader perspective on educational leadership and operational structures. Trainee Raj noted, "Every school has a unique culture through student engagement and the extracurricular activities they carry out." Trainee Isabelle shared how her experience has helped her think about her teaching career beyond the Initial Teacher Training programme, "My second school placement has given me an insight into management and different ways to organise a school. There are definitely pros and cons to both and [it's] something I need to consider when applying for an ECT job."

Adapting to a new environment posed some initial challenges but our trainees pushed through these. Several emphasised the importance of flexibility and resilience, particularly in adjusting to new classroom expectations. "Adapting to a new school environment was initially overwhelming,' said trainee Hannah, "I had to familiarise myself with policies, build relationships with the pupils and develop subject knowledge in areas such as phonics. However, this experience has been highly beneficial, enhancing my adaptability and contributing to my development as a well-rounded teacher." Similarly, Trainee Deepsharan reflected, "At the start, I found it hard and 'different' being somewhere new, but over time despite the struggles, I started to love it and really enjoy it."

We're pleased that our second school placements have proved to be valuable and eye-opening experiences for our trainees. From boosting confidence to gaining an in-depth understanding of school operations, each challenge and success has played a crucial role in their professional development. The adaptability and perseverance they have demonstrated during their placements will undoubtedly continue to grow and shape their teaching careers, equipping them with the skills and resilience needed to thrive in the classroom and beyond.
