What are the entry requirements?
If you’re applying for Initial Teacher Training (ITT) you must have an undergraduate degree (or equivalent).
- For QTS only ideally with a 1st, 2:1 or 2:2*
- For QTS & PGCE you must have a 1st, 2:1 or 2:2
*Teach West London may be willing to consider applicants who have a 3rd in their degree for the QTS only pathway, this will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis.
Proof of certificates for UK and international qualifications will be required.
All applicants must have at least:
- Grade 4/C (or equivalent) in GCSE Maths
- Grace 4/C (or equivalent) in GCSE English
- For primary courses, a grade 4/C (or equivalent) in a GCSE Science subject
Although it is not essential, it is desirable for fee-funded applicants to have had some experience, including observing lessons in a UK primary school by the time that the training course begins. Before you apply, we recommend you gain as much experience in the classroom as possible, which will strengthen your application and prepare yourself for potential interviews as well as ensuring that teaching is the career that you want to pursue. To find out more about getting school experience, please visit Get school experience - Get school experience - GOV.UK (education.gov.uk) or visit our events page for upcoming opportunities with Teach West London.
For salaried applicants, school experience is strongly recommended. Applicants for our apprenticeship programmes must be able to demonstrate readiness for independent classroom teaching from the start of the programme, as they are likely to be teaching up to 12 hours per week from September. We therefore expect candidates to have gained experience in schools, including lesson observation and opportunities to work directly with, and ideally teach, children in Primary Schools. School experience may be paid or voluntary. Experience in UK schools is strongly preferred. Applicants without UK school experience who are offered a place will be required to gain relevant UK school experience before the programme begins.
Applicants should also have a strong employment history, ideally three years full-time or more, although this does not need to have been gained in a school setting.
We will only accept applications for our PGTA programmes when we have a prospective employing school expressing interest with us. If applications are not currently open for our Primary PGTA, we encourage you to register your interest here and we'll keep you informed about future placement opportunities.
